Toronto Raptors win first NBA title |
Toronto Raptors beat Golden State Warriors 114-110 and closed a 4-2 win in the NBA finals. The Toronto Raptors delivered Canada its first NBA title over the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors (with 3 titles in the last 4 years and 5 consecutive NBA finals). Toronto faced a Golden State Warriors team diminished throughout the finals with injuries of some of its most influencing players. Nevertheless the Toronto Raptors team posted an impressive performance leaded by Leonard and with a very balanced team with players coming from the bench and scoring decisive points. In game 6 Fred Vanvleet scored 22 points including 5 three pointers, earning a nomination to the MVP of the finals that was in the end awarded to Kawahi Leonard. |

One of the greatest comebacks ever |
Liverpool produced a sensational second-leg comeback to eliminate Barcelona, overturning a 3-0 deficit with a 4-0 triumph at Anfield to set up a final date in Madrid on 1 June with either Ajax or Tottenham. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had asked for a "football party" in the build-up to Tuesday semi-final second leg against Barcelona, but this was surely beyond anything the German had envisaged prior to kick-off. "When I saw the boys at full-time with tears in their eyes – that is football. This club touches you like crazy. It is like you feel much more than others in these moments." |

Wales 21-13 England |
Wales managed to get their 12th straight win, by beating England in Cardiff. More than halfway through this match England were seven points up and seemingly in control. But in the decisive last 20 minutes, for the first time this year England came under ferocious, sustained pressure and they found no-one who could come to the rescue. England kept kicking but the Welsh back three kept swallowing them up. When Biggar ran on with 20 minutes to go, the roar from the crowd was an augury all of its own. It had been strangely muted in the stadium at times in the first period, but that score brought back aftershocks of the bedlam of 2013. When Josh Adams went over at the death, it was as deafening again as when Alex Cuthbert had dived into the same right-hand corner for the second of his two tries in that famous championship-deciding win. The Millennium Stadium spilled 60,000 celebrating Welsh fans into the darkening streets of Cardiff to join the thousands of others already cavorting in the pubs. Wales can now dream of a third Grand Slam in the last 10 years and what the World Cup might yet bring. |

Patriots win Super Bowl LIII for 6th title |
Once again, the New England Patriots are champions, grinding to win Super Bowl LIII 13-3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta -- and launching Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick into a different stratosphere. They have now won six Super Bowls together, extending their record for the most by a head coach and starting quarterback combination. With the win, the Patriots are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl titles in NFL history. Brady now has won more Super Bowls than any other player in history, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Haley (five). At 41 years old, Brady also is the oldest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, eclipsing Peyton Manning, who was 39 when he won Super Bowl 50. Edelman -- who was named MVP -- had 10 catches for 141 yards. In addition to already having the second-most receptions in postseason history, he is now second all time in postseason receiving yards. He trails just the legendary Jerry Rice in both categories. Edelman, who in his college days was a quarterback at Kent State, was drafted by New England in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft. He is the seventh wide receiver to be named Super Bowl MVP. |

The four Boston-area teams have won a combined 37 world championships in their long histories; the nine teams that represented Los Angeles -- including the Raiders for a time and Anaheim Ducks of the NHL -- have won 22. The Patriots will play their ninth Super Bowl since the 2001 season, and eleventh overall, while LA Rams will only play their second. |

Johnny Sexton named player of the year |
Johnny Sexton became the first Irishman to win the men player of the year award since Keith Wood in 2001. It is the first time in seven years the award has gone to a player from outside of New Zealand. Fly-half Sexton, 33, fought off competition from All Blacks duo Rieko Ioane and Beauden Barrett, who was looking to collect the award for the third straight time. Sexton remarkable year at club and international level saw him win three major competitions: the Pro14, Champions Cup and the Six Nations. The Leinster captain also led the way in Ireland Grand Slam-winning Six Nations campaign, scoring a match winning drop-goal with the last kick of the game against France on the first day of the championship. "If a number 10 wins an award like this it is due to the team around his," said Sexton. The Six Nations champions were also named team of the year. |

I lost my legs but not my daredevil spirit |
It is a grey day in April 2017. Billy Monger gets his car into action as the lights signal. It is two weeks before Billy 18th birthday, but he is more excited about this race than impending adulthood. Today, he is competing in the Formula 4 British Championship at Donington Park. The race is off to a chaotic start, and suddenly, on a corner, two cars ahead of Billy pull out of the way, revealing a third car, stationary on the track. It is too late; he does not have time to pull out of the way. At 120mph, he collides into the back of another car. Silence falls over the racetrack. Ever since he was 10 years old, Billy had wanted to race in F1 like his hero, Lewis Hamilton. Billy had poured all his energy into making that a reality but, suddenly, it seemed like his dream might be over. When, three days later, Billy awoke, his surgeon broke the news that he had lost both his legs. The way the doctor tells it, it was as if Billy was actually the one who comforted him at that moment. “I remember him gripping my hand, as much as to say, - It is okay,” he says. In September 2018, almost a year and a half after the crash that could have killed him, Billy returned to Donington Park, the same track where his accident happened. In qualifying, his lap times were good enough to put him in pole position at the head of the pack. Billy scored two pole positions and got a podium in the last race. |

World Cup expansion to 48 teams could happen at Qatar 2022 |
The change would require Qatar to share 2022 hosting duties with other countries in the region. The decision has already been taken to expand the tournament in 2026, when it will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, and Infantino is now considering doing the same for 2022. "If it is possible, why not?" he said. "We have to see if it is possible, if it is feasible. We are discussing with our Qatari friends, we are discussing with our many other friends in the region and we hope that this can happen. "And, if not, we will have tried. We will have tried because we always have to try to do things in a better way." |

Breakdown of CR7 goals in CL |
With 120 goals (and counting), CR7 is the all-time leading scorer in Champions League. But how has he gone about his business in this premier club competition? Ronaldo has reached double figures for the last seven seasons. His most prolific season was 2013-14, when he reached 17 goals, the most goals scored by a single player in a single Champions League campaign. Ronaldo has scored 60 goals in knockout stages, including 4 in finals (only behind Alfredo Di Stefano with 5) and 13 in semi-finals. 68% of the goals were scored with his right foot, 17% headers and 15% left foot. 93 of his 120 CL goals have come from open play, whilst he has reached double figures in both free-kicks (12) and penalties (15). Ronaldo has been slightly more prolific in the second half of Champions League matches, scoring 64 times (53.3%) as opposed to 53 (44.2%) in the first half. Ronaldo certainly enjoys playing against German opposition, as he has netted 26 times against them in the Champions League. He has also reached double figures against Italian (18), French (12) and English (11) clubs. In terms of specific clubs, he scored against 32 different opponents, being Juventus (10) and Bayern (9) his favourite targets. Johan Wiland, Manuel Neuer and Gianluigi Buffon have the unfortunate distinction of conceding the most goals to Ronaldo (nine). |

France secure second title |
Despite Croatia having the majority of possession in the opening stages, France took the lead in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. Antoine Griezmann s lofted free kick from the French right was nodded into his own net by Mario Mandzukic. Ivan Perisic levelled with a calm effort from the edge of the penalty area, but he would turn from hero to villain. A cross from the French right-hand side was handled by the Croatia No4, with a penalty awarded after a VAR review. In the second half France scored 2 more goals and in the end, the big No17 s strike was not enough to spark yet another miraculous Croatian comeback, and Les Bleus emulate their heroes of 1998 - including coach Didier Deschamps - in securing their second World Cup title. |

Cristiano Ronaldo scores sensational hat-trick as Portugal hold Spain in a World Cup classic. All World Cup finals need great players to do great things and there are few who intervene more consistently than Cristiano Ronaldo, king of the big stage and all that happens on it. Just a hat-trick to declare in this, his 151st cap for Portugal against the great Spain generation of the 21st century, including a third from a free-kick which was one of those moments when he insists that the world stops what it is doing to watch. He hitched up his shorts, shut his eyes for a moment, took a deep breath and then clipped a right-foot shot around the wall so accurately that David de Gea did not even spring for it. |

A Golden Era: Warriors Defeat Cavaliers, Capture NBA Title |
Warriors clean up Cavaliers with a sweep, capture third NBA title in four years. It was the ninth sweep (4-0) in Finals history and the largest margin of victory (+60) in a sweep. The fact that their core group of Curry, Durant and All-Stars Draymond Green and Klay Thompson are all 30 or younger and in the primes of their respective careers, is the most frightening part for the rest of the league. The Warriors are stacked for the foreseeable future and so long as they are reasonably healthy, they will continue to be a roadblock for any other team in the NBA with championship ambitions, including whatever team LeBron plays on. “Get used to it,” Thompson said, “because we are just getting started.” Focus for too long on what could have been or what might be in the future, and you will miss what these Golden State Warriors are right here and right now. |

Madrid beat Liverpool to complete hat-trick |
Real Madrid completed their third straight UEFA Champions League triumph with a 3-1 defeat of Liverpool in Kyiv. There is a saying in Spain: El Madrid es el Madrid. They are Madrid and they just get things done, no matter the situation. Three in a row, Zidane absolutely got it spot on, and you would not bet against a fourth next year either. Klopp s troops burst out of the traps and forced Navas into several good saves, but Salah s early departure proved to be the turning point. Liverpool players were inconsolable at full time, needless to say, but once the pain of defeat subsides they can look back with immense pride at their achievements in the competition this term. |

Champions League last eight: which nations dominate? |
Sevilla and Barcelona both knocking out English opposition means that Spain are the dominant nation in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the seventh year running. Indeed, in the past four campaigns Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid formed Spain trio of quarter-finalists, with the winners emerging from among their number; Atlético are absent this time but Sevilla have taken their place. |
